Halloween's Approaching

Helen Thompson

Growing up my mother celebrated EVERY holiday from Valentines Day in February to Kwanza in December. She, Cookie, absolutely loved seeing her children dress up and have a blast eating holiday candy releases, dancing around on the stage during a Cinco de Mayo play, or opening gifts on a birthday or Christmas.

She found joy in seeing us happy.

Halloween 🎃 is approaching (It's still July but I start planning early) and my fondest memory of celebrating Halloween with my mother was hilarious. As my siblings and I became adults, we gravitated away from  “celebrating” anything that involved demons and ghosts. Lol! My older brother was here to do the Lord’s work and he was not willing to compromise that at all. Lol!

Charles had 4 children, two had made it into the world around this time and had become a staple in my and my mother’s household. This particular year we had Olivia and Aleesha (Charles’ oldest two), Yami (Greg’s oldest), and Ev and Ray (my oldest) and, somehow, we ended up at Walmart buying Halloween costumes for everyone. Lol!

Cookie KNEW it was “wrong” for Olivia and Aleesha to wear these costumes. Charles vehemently expressed his disdain for Halloween and anything remotely similar to the holiday or an expression of it, so, my mom knew it was off limits. WE knew it was off limits. But, in true mom form, since she didn’t see a correlation between this fun holiday and worshipping demons, she got them costumes too. Lol! And that made this entire thing absolutely

HILARIOUS. She didn’t want them to feel left out.

So… The day before Halloween we dressed the kids up and let them play in the yard. Olivia and Aleesha were so satisfied with their Care Bear 🐻 costumes and were extremely happy to wear them to play. Whilst playing, the neighbors saw them and joined in the fun. They began giving them candy and made a big deal (in a good way) about these four babies out flipping around the front yard dressed in their costumes. Lol!

We took pictures. Probably the only mistake I felt we made. Lol!

Long story short, we had the photos developed and showed Charles and Tristan when they came to pick the kids up for the “Fall Festival” at church that night. Lol!

They were incredibly upset and that made me laugh the hardest I'd laughed ever.
